ALSO, FOR THOSE SAME REASONS, SOME OF THE STAFF WILL BE BY ZOOM TONIGHT, AND WE APPLAUD YOU GUYS FOR BEING SAFE.

DR. CLARK, I THINK THAT'S YOU.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH, MR. TOLBERT AND DR.

STINSON AND BOARD. I WANT TO SAY THAT JENNIFER MILLER, WHO IS DIRECTOR OF INTERVENTION, IS UP THERE ON THE BIG SCREEN, AND SHE IS ONE THAT HAS BEEN TASKED WITH COORDINATING ALL THE PLANNING THAT GOES INTO PART OF OUR SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM, AND SHE WORKS WITH A VERY LARGE COMMITTEE THAT INVOLVES MANY, MANY STAKEHOLDERS ACROSS A LOT OF THE JUST ABOUT EVERY DEPARTMENT THAT WE HAVE IN THE DISTRICT.

I THINK THAT IT'S WORTH MENTIONING THAT SUMMER SCHOOL PLANNING ENDS WITH AN EVALUATION ABOUT CONDUCTED IN AUGUST, AND THEN WE START ACTUALLY PLANNING FOR THE NEXT YEAR'S SU MMER SCHOOL AND IN OCTOBER, AND IT'S ALSO WORTH NOTING THAT WE JUST BASICALLY HAVE YEAR ROUND SCHOOL IN THAT WE HAVE A SPECIAL ED PROGRAM THAT'S CALLED EXTENDED SCHOOL YEAR PROGRAM. WE HAVE EMERGENT BILINGUAL PROGRAM THAT'S REQUIRED.

WHAT I'M GOING TO SPEAK TO YOU TONIGHT IS ABOUT THE CLOSING THE ACADEMIC GAP, WHICH INVOLVES ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL, AND THEN WE ALSO HAVE A MULTIPLICITY

OF ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES THAT WE DO THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER.

SO BASICALLY, PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW, BUT WE HAVE YEAR-ROUND SCHOOL.

SO I WILL START WITH THESE FOLLOWING ASSUMPTIONS AND TO SAY THAT ONE OF THE THINGS I WANT TO HIGHLIGHT RIGHT HERE IS BULLET NUMBER TWO AND THREE THAT WE DID DO A SURVEY OF OUR TEACHERS AND STAFF, AND WE HAVE REALLY CHANGED SOME OF THE DESIGN OF OUR ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAMS BASED UPON WHAT OUR TEACHERS TOLD US, AND IN LIGHT OF THE FACT THAT WE KNOW HOW TIRED TEACHERS ARE AND THAT GETTING PEOPLE TO COMMIT TO MORE TIME DURING THE SUMMER, PLUS ALL THE TRAINING THAT THEY DO REALLY PLACES A HARDSHIP ON OUR TEACHERS.

SO WE HAVE COME UP WITH SOME INNOVATIVE THINGS ABOUT HOW WE ARE GOING TO SCHEDULE, AND I'LL TALK ABOUT THAT IN SOME LATER SLIDES, BUT SUMMER SCHOOL, WE'VE GOT ANOTHER NEW PROGRAM THAT I WILL MENTION CALLED JUMP START, WHERE WE ARE GOING TO REALLY FOCUS ON SCHOOL READINESS AND TRANSITIONS, KNOWING THAT WHEN KIDS MOVE FROM FIFTH GRADE TO MIDDLE SCHOOL, THAT'S A BIG TRANSITION.

SO WE WANT TO SET THEM ON THE RIGHT FOOT, AND THAT'S TRUE FOR OUR ELEMENTARY, ESPECIALLY OUR YOUNG CHILDREN WHO DO NOT KNOW THE ROUTINES YET, AND THEY NEED TO HAVE THAT READINESS TRAINING. SO THIS SLIDE.

ONE OF THE MAIN POINTS TO POINT OUT IS THAT WE HAVE USED ESSER FUNDS AGAIN THIS YEAR AND COMPENSATORY FUNDS LIKE WE DID LAST YEAR, AND THAT OUR LOCATIONS ARE CHENEY HILLS, BINION, STOWE, WEST BIRDVILLE, SMITHVILLE ELEMENTARY, NORTH RIDGE MIDDLE AND RICHLAND HIGH SCHOOL. WE WORK VERY CLOSELY WITH KATIE'S DEPARTMENTS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE NOT INTERFERING WITH THE MAINTENANCE, BUILDING AND MAINTENANCE, AND WE ALSO WORK VERY CLOSELY WITH THE TRANSPORTATION TO MAXIMIZE THE USE OF TRANSPORTATION.

HERE'S SOME OF THE PROGRAMMING THAT WE HAVE DONE.

THE SCHEDULE CHANGES THAT WE LAST YEAR, WE WENT HALF DAYS AND WENT MORE DAYS BECAUSE WE HAD THE ACADEMIC GAPS THAT WE WANTED TO ADDRESS THIS YEAR BECAUSE OF THE SURVEY AND OUR TEACHERS EXPRESSING HOW TIRED THEY WERE.

WE DID A NEW REDESIGN AND WE DECIDED TO GO FULL DAYS WITH FEWER DAYS.

SO THAT WAY WE FELT LIKE THAT WOULD ALSO HELP PARENTS BECAUSE YOU COULD BRING YOUR CHILD OR THEY COULD GET THE TRANSPORTATION, COME TO THE SCHOOL IN THE MORNING AND STAY ALL DAY LONG, AND WE ALSO HAVE BUILT IN ACTIVITIES WHERE WE'RE ALSO GOING TO HAVE A FIELD TRIP FOR OUR ELEMENTARY SO THAT WE CAN CONCLUDE THEIR SUMMER PROGRAM.

SO AGAIN, WE'RE TRYING TO MAKE THIS A PROGRAM THAT INCLUDES ENRICHMENT AS WELL AS CLOSING THOSE ACADEMIC GAPS.

ONE OF THE MAIN THINGS THAT WE ARE TRYING TO ADDRESS THAT THE TEACHERS TOLD US VERY LOUD AND CLEAR WAS THAT ALL OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF HOUSE BILL 4545 HAVE REALLY PLACED A TREMENDOUS BURDEN ON CAMPUSES, PARTICULARLY WITH THAT 30 HOUR REQUIREMENT FOR EACH OF THE SUBJECTS THAT THEY THAT STUDENTS MAY HAVE FAILED.

SO BY GOING TO SUMMER SCHOOL, THEY WILL MEET THAT 30 HOUR REQUIREMENT, AND WE WON'T HAVE TO DO THE TUTORING BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL.

SO THE CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDENTS REMAINS THE SAME THAT WE DID LAST YEAR.

THE ELIGIBLE STUDENTS, THE NUMBERS ARE REALLY ABOUT THE SAME.

WE'RE BASING IT ON THESE PARTICULAR NUMBERS AT SECONDARY AND THESE AT THE ELEMENTARY.

NOW THIS IS BASED ON DATA THAT WE HAVE.

IT'S NOT A GUARANTEE THAT WE WILL HAVE ALL OF THESE STUDENTS, BUT ONE OF THE THINGS WE'RE DOING THIS YEAR, WE'RE SENDING A LETTER TO ALL OF OUR PARENTS OF THESE STUDENTS, AND WE'RE USING VERY STRONG ENCOURAGING LANGUAGE TO SAY THAT THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUR CHILD TO MEET THAT HOUSE BILL 4545 REQUIREMENT, WHICH WILL SET THEM IN GOOD SITUATION FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR AND IT WON'T BE SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE A BURDEN TO THE PARENTS OR INTERFERE WITH ANY OF THOSE EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND THINGS THAT OUR STUDENTS LIKE TO PARTICIPATE.

THE STAFFING IS ALL BASED UPON THESE JOB CLASSIFICATIONS.

WE DON'T KNOW RIGHT YET EXACTLY HOW MANY TEACHERS IT WILL TAKE, BECAUSE THAT'S ALL BASED UPON THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO ACTUALLY DO REGISTER, BUT WE'RE IN THE MIDST OF RECRUITING RIGHT NOW, AND SURPRISINGLY--I'M THRILLED WITH THIS--WE'VE HAD A VERY POSITIVE RESPONSE FROM OUR TEACHERS.

WE HAVE WONDERFUL TEACHERS WHO WORK VERY HARD AND THEY CARE ABOUT THEIR STUDENTS AND SO THIS IS JUST ANOTHER INDICATION OF THEIR COMMITMENT.

THE COST OF SUMMER SCHOOL, WE'RE BASING IT ON THE SAME NUMBER THAT WE USED LAST YEAR.

LIKE I SAID, WE START PLANNING REALLY VERY EARLY AND WE INCLUDED ALL OF THESE NUMBERS IN OUR ESSER BUDGET THAT YOU HAVE APPROVED, AS WELL AS OUR STATE COMPARED BUDGET THAT WE ALSO HAVE BUILT IN TO OUR CURRENT BUDGET.

THE NEXT STEPS FOR SUMMER SCHOOL IS TO CONTINUE TO PREPARE STAFFING AND SALARY INFORMATION. WE'RE CONTINUING OUR RECRUITMENT PROCESS.

WE HAVE DRAFTED THIS LETTER AND ONCE THE STAAR RESULTS COME OUT.

PARENTS WILL CERTAINLY BE NOTIFIED.

WE'RE IN THE PROCESS OF ANY OF OUR MEETINGS THAT WE HAVE THAT HAVE TO DO WITH OUR 504, DYSLEXIC, ANYTHING LIKE THAT WHERE WE CAN LET PARENTS KNOW ABOUT THIS AND AMPLE TIME FOR THEM TO, YOU KNOW, TO PLAN VACATIONS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT.

SO WE'RE WE WILL CONTINUE TO MEET WITH OUR VARIOUS DEPARTMENTS AND, AND THAT INCLUDES FOOD SERVICE, TRANSPORTATION, MAINTENANCE, TECHNOLOGY IS HUGE.

THE SUMMER TESTING PROGRAM AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL IS A VERY BIG DEAL AND IT REQUIRES A LOT OF COLLABORATION AND COORDINATION WITH DAVE'S DEPARTMENTS.

NOW, I WANT TO GIVE JUST A LITTLE BIT OF INFORMATION ON THIS.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE OTHER THINGS THAT WE DO IN THE JUMP START.

I'M VERY EXCITED.

I DON'T KNOW THAT YOU WILL RECALL, BUT A HOUSE BILL 4545 AS WELL AS HOUSE BILL III, HAS A LOT OF ASSESSMENTS INCLUDED IN THAT, PARTICULARLY AT OUR PRIMARY GRADES WHERE WE REQUIRE OUR TEACHERS TO DO ONE TO ONE ASSESSMENTS.

THAT'S BASED UPON TEA REGULATIONS.

SO THEY GAVE US SOME ASSESSMENTS THAT WE GET TO CHOOSE FROM AND ONE OF THEM WAS IN CLASS , AND IT DOES REQUIRE OUR TEACHERS TO DO A ONE TO ONE EVALUATION OF OUR K-2 STUDENTS, AND SO THIS IS ANOTHER THING OUR TEACHERS TOLD US THAT THE ASSESSMENTS THAT ARE BEING PLACED UPON OUR TEACHERS ARE VERY, VERY CHALLENGING, AND SO IF ANYTHING THAT YOU COULD SAY TO LEGISLATORS, IT WOULD BE PLEASE RELIEVE OUR TEACHERS FROM SOME OF THESE ASSESSMENTS BECAUSE WHEN YOU SEE OUR ASSESSMENT CALENDAR AND AT ANOTHER POINT IN TIME, MONICA WILL SHARE THAT WITH YOU.

YOU JUST WOULD NOT BELIEVE THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT WE DO SPEND ASSESSING KIDS.

SO BY DOING THIS JUMP START, WE'RE GOING TO SAY THAT WE WILL ASSESS THE STUDENTS BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS SO THAT ONCE THEY COME TO SCHOOL, WE'LL ALREADY HAVE THE DATA THAT WE NEED AND TEACHERS CAN GO THROUGH THE ROUTINES AND THE PROCEDURES OF HOW TO COME TO THE CARPET.

WHAT IT MEANS TO HOW DO YOU WALK DOWN TO THE CAFETERIA, TO THE LIBRARY.

SO IT'S ALL THOSE THINGS THAT IT'S THE READINESS AND THE TRANSITION FROM BEING AT HOME OR BEING IN A KINDERGARTEN CLASS, GOING TO A FIRST GRADE CLASS, AND ESPECIALLY, I'M EXCITED ABOUT WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL TO GET OUR SIXTH GRADE KIDS READY FOR CHANGING CLASSES AND TAKING NOTES AND KEEPING UP WITH EVERYTHING.

SO I THINK IT'S GOING TO BE A GREAT THING, AND THIS IS KIND OF I WILL GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE'LL DO, AND I BELIEVE THAT IS MY PRESENTATION.

CAN YOU TALK TO THE BOARD JUST A BIT ABOUT THE STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAM IN TERMS OF IF A

TEACHER CHOOSES TO PARTICIPATE IN SUMMER SCHOOL, THEY'RE NOT NECESSARILY THERE FOR THE FULL FIVE AND A HALF WEEKS IF THEY'RE SECONDARY; THEY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE CERTAIN PORTIONS.

ABSOLUTELY, AND SO IF THEY LIKE, FOR INSTANCE, THEY CAN SWAP OUT LIKE IF THEY NEED LIKE IT COULD TAKE TWO ALGEBRA TEACHERS SO THEY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE, AND THAT AND THEN WE DO OFFER A LOT OF BLENDED THROUGH EDGENUITY SO THAT THEY CAN BE MONITORED AND AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL. THIS YEAR, WE ARE GOING TO DO LIKE IF A STUDENT FAILED A STAAR MATH, THEY WOULD TAKE ONE WEEK AND SO THAT TEACHER WOULD ONLY HAVE TO TEACH ONE WEEK.

THEN, IF THEY FAILED A MATH AND READING THE STUDENT WOULD BE THERE FOR TWO WEEKS, BUT THAT TEACHER WOULD NOT BE THERE, AND THEN OUR MATH AND SCIENCE, IT'S A BLENDED MODEL.

SO AND WE DID THAT IN RESPONSE TO OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPALS WHO WERE VERY CONCERNED THAT, YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE A REQUIRED ASSESSMENT AT THE EIGHTH GRADE FOR THOSE COURSES, BUT WE WEREN'T OFFERING ANYTHING FOR SUMMER SCHOOL.

SO THIS YEAR WE ADDED THAT THROUGH A BLENDED MODEL.

I THINK THAT'S GREAT FOR STAFF FOR VARIOUS REASONS.

SO I JUST WANTED TO POINT OUT THAT WE'RE VERY COGNIZANT THAT FOR THREE YEARS NOW, THREE YEARS OF OF A LINGERING PANDEMIC, THAT WE'RE DOING EVERYTHING WE CAN TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS AND ALSO OUR TEACHERS.

SO FOR INSTANCE, IF MY DAUGHTER OR ANOTHER STUDENT MADE CS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, BUT THEN THEY FAILED THE STAAR TEST, THEY COULD COME AND TAKE--ABSOLUTELY, AND THAT'S THE COMMUNICATION THAT WE'LL HAVE.

AFTER THE BOARD'S ADOPTION OF THE RESOLUTION AND LOCAL SHAC AND THE LOCAL SHAC WILL THEN HOLD AT LEAST TWO PUBLIC MEETINGS ON THE CURRICULUM MATERIALS BEFORE ADOPTING ANY RECOMMENDATIONS. THE LOCAL SHAC RECOMMENDATIONS MUST COMPLY WITH THE INSTRUCTIONAL CONTENT REQUIREMENTS IN LAW, BE SUITABLE FOR THE SUBJECT AND GRADE LEVEL FOR WHICH THE MATERIALS ARE INTENDED AND BE REVIEWED BY ACADEMIC EXPERTS IN THE SUBJECT AND GRADE LEVEL FOR WHICH THE MATERIALS ARE INTENDED.

ALSO INFORMING PARENTS OF THEIR RIGHT TO REVIEW CURRICULUM MATERIALS AND REMOVE THE STUDENT FROM ANY PART OF HUMAN SEXUALITY INSTRUCTION, AND THE DISTRICT MUST OBTAIN WRITTEN CONSENT OF THE STUDENT'S PARENT PRIOR TO PROVIDING HUMAN SEXUALITY INSTRUCTION. THIS IS AN OPT-IN.

SO A PARENT HAS TO REQUEST FOR A STUDENT TO BE PLACED IN THIS.

ALSO, SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN VERY OFTEN IN A SCHOOL DISTRICT IS ALL THREE BASKETBALL TEAMS FOR THE BOYS ALL MADE IT TO PLAY-OFFS.
