YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU HAVE 3000 STUDENTS AND YOU HAVE TWO, THEY DEFINITELY HAVE DONE SOME THINGS TO RISE TO THE TOP, TO BE SELECTED IN THE MIDDLE OF JULY, TO COME UP.

AND THEY'RE THE MOST RELIABLE STUDENTS.

BUT THESE ARE TWO WONDERFUL YOUNG LADIES.

I'M HERE ON BEHALF OF THE HALTOM HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT BODY AS THE 2023 SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK OUR BOARD OF TRUSTEES, OUR SUPERINTENDENT AND OUR SUPERINTENDENTS CABINET, WHO I AM SURE WILL LEAD THE WAY TO A SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL YEAR, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE OBSTACLES WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED THESE PAST YEARS, SUCH AS THE PANDEMIC.

I BELIEVE THAT IT HAS EXCUSE ME.

I BELIEVE THAT IT HAS MADE US A STRONGER UNIT AND WE HAVE THE CAPACITY TO SURPASS ANY FURTHER DISTURBANCE THAT MAY INTERVENE OUR PATH.

THE BEST LEGACY THAT ROLE MODELS CAN PROVIDE US FOR US AS YOUNG ADULTS IS IN EDUCATION, WHETHER IT BE IN OUR HOME SCHOOLS OR LIFE OVERALL.

THIS IS BECAUSE EDUCATION IS AN EMPOWERING TOOL THAT SERVES TO POSITIVELY GUIDE OUR DEVELOPMENT AS INDIVIDUALS.

WE TRUST IN BOTH THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND THE SUPERINTENDENTS CABINET THAT WE ARE UNDER RELIABLE AND DILIGENT CARE TO HELP INSTRUCT THAT VALUABLE TOOL.

BUT THE HIGHLIGHT HERE IS SINCE BEGINNING THE PROGRAM, THE REDUCTION WOULD BE ENOUGH TO RUN ALL THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS IN THE DISTRICT FOR OVER FOUR OVER A YEAR AND A HALF WITH THE AMOUNT OF ENERGY THAT'S BEEN AVOIDED, STARTED OUT AT 39.7.

WHY WHAT WHY IS IT'S A COMBINATION OF NATURAL GAS AND ELECTRICITY.

IT'S BLENDED TOGETHER IN A BTU NUMBER AND IT'S KIND OF AN INDUSTRY STANDARD TO FOLLOW.

YOU GUYS, WE'RE AT ABOUT A 40 AUI AND CURRENTLY AT A 30 Y REDUCTION OF 24% OVERALL.

WE'RE STILL TRYING TO SQUEEZE SOME STUFF OUT AND I HATE TO POINT THIS OUT WHILE WE'RE IN HERE, BUT WE PULLED UP AND I SAID, THE LIGHTS ARE ON IN THE PARKING LOT OUT HERE.

OR TO WHAT IS THAT, 2 TRILLION CELL PHONES CHARGED? THAT IS THE END OF THE INFORMATION I HAVE.

ALTHOUGH THE TRAINING WAS PRIMARILY FOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS, I MET SUPERINTENDENTS, ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENTS.

I MET ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE, EVEN PRINCIPALS WERE THERE.

I WAS ABLE TO FORGE NEW RELATIONSHIPS AND NEW FRIENDSHIPS WITH MEMBERS OF SMALL AS WELL AS LARGE SCHOOL DISTRICTS.

BUT THE BEST EXPERIENCE WAS REALIZING HOW PLEASED I WAS TO LEARN HOW BIRDVILLE ISD COMPARED TO THE OTHER DISTRICTS.

AND AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED, FROM THE CONVERSATIONS THAT I PARTICIPATED IN, WE HAD THE BEST SUPERINTENDENT, THE BEST CABINET MEMBERS AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES IN TEXAS.

SO I'M NOT REAL BRIEF.

I HAVE SOME MORE. ON THE FIRST DAY, I MET A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER FROM PLANO ISD AND WE GOT TO TALKING.

SHE JUST HAPPENED TO GIVE A DIPLOMA TO MY GRANDDAUGHTER, WHO GRADUATED FROM PLANO WEST IN PLANO ISD.

SO AGAIN, RELATIONSHIPS WERE FORMED AND THEN SHE WANTED ME TO MAKE SURE MY GRANDDAUGHTER REMEMBERED.

I DOUBT IF SHE DID SO.

BUT THROUGHOUT EACH SESSION, FRIENDSHIPS WERE DEVELOPED MORE AND MORE, AND THAT WILL BE VITAL FOR THE REMAINDER OF MY ROLE AS A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER.

SO WEDNESDAY EVENING AT THE REGISTRATION AND DINNER, THE SESSION ENTITLED REBOOT 22 2022, DISCUSS WAYS FOR EVERYONE PARENTS, STUDENTS, TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS AND OTHER STAFF MEMBERS TO COME BACK TOGETHER AND ESTABLISH THE NORMAL THAT WE ALL NEED.

PRIOR TO, OF COURSE, THE PANDEMIC AND THE ONLY WAY TO ACCOMPLISH THIS IS TO HAVE A GENUINE CONVERSATION, BE AUTHENTIC, BE REAL, NOT ONLY TO BUILD TRUST FOR THE SAKE OF THE CHILDREN OR THE STUDENTS, BUT FOR THE SAKE OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

THE PRESENTERS WERE SENIOR CONSULTANT FROM TABB BOARD DEVELOPMENT SERVICES AND THE FOUNDER OF STRONG FATHERS AND STRONG FAMILIES.

THEN EARLY THURSDAY MORNING MY DAY BEGAN WITH A GENERAL SESSION WITH ROBIN BENINCASA, WHO WAS ENGAGING, ENTERTAINING AS WELL AS INSPIRATIONAL. AND I'M GOING TO SKIP ON DOWN.

SHE SUGGESTED THAT WE TAKE OWNERSHIP OF ANY CHALLENGES THAT WE HAVE, THAT WE SHOULD HIRE THE INSPIRED PEOPLE, BUT WE SHOULD INSPIRE THE HIRED.

WE SHOULD ALSO ACT AS A TEAM WITH MUTUAL RESPECT, LOYALTY AND MENTOR UNSELFISHLY.

AND SHE ALSO STATED THAT IT'S NOT ABOUT THE SETBACK, IT'S ABOUT THE COMEBACK.

BUT WE ARE RULED BY HOPE.

EACH SESSION BECAME MORE AND MORE INTERESTING AS THE PROGRAM WENT ALONG.

SO THE SECOND SESSION OF THE DAY WAS PUBLIC.

PUBLIC EDUCATION IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE POLITICAL.

AND IT TALKED ABOUT HOW TO FILTER ISSUES THROUGH PERSONAL POLITICAL LEANINGS AND KEEP THE FOCUS ON WHAT'S BEST FOR THE STUDENTS.

THIRD SESSION.

BUSY DAY FOR ME.

TAKE THIS JOB AND NOT SHOVE IT, BUT LOVE IT.

SENIOR CONSULTANT FROM TASB TALKED ABOUT COMMITMENT, BURNOUT AND RE-ENERGIZING, AND SHE EMPHASIZED THAT WE FEEL LIKE WE'VE BEEN BURNT OUT, DISCOURAGED ABOUT OUR SERVICE TO THE BOARD OR TO THE SUPERINTENDENT.

AND IF WE FEEL LIKE MAKE A GOOD DIFFERENCE FOR OUR KIDS AND THE DISTRICT, WE HAVEN'T MADE A DIFFERENCE.

WE NEED TO EXAMINE THE SITUATION, DEVELOP A NEW STRATEGY AND RENEW THE COMMITMENT AND ENTHUSIASM WE HAD WHEN WE FIRST GOT THIS POSITION.

SO AFTER THAT, I WAS OK LUNCH WAS DELICIOUS AND I SAT AT A TABLE WITH MORE PEOPLE AND MOST OF THEM WERE FROM VERY SMALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS.

AND I WAS SURPRISED TO HEAR THAT THEY ONLY HAD 400 STUDENTS IN SOME OF THESE SCHOOL DISTRICTS.

I WAS APPALLED.

THEN THE NEXT ONE 600 LIKE, OH MY GOODNESS, HOW MANY IN YOUR DISTRICT BRENDA? OH ALL ABOUT 23,000? YOU KNOW, LIKE, MY GOSH, BOARD SESSION.

WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT RACE AND CULTURE? WELL, WE LEARN HOW TO WORK EFFECTIVELY WITH A DIVERSE STUDENT POPULATION REGARDLESS OF RACE, INCOME, GENDER OR LANGUAGE.

AND THAT'S WHAT OUR DISTRICT IS COMPRISED OF VERY DIFFERENT PEOPLE.

MOST OF THE TIME IT WAS STATED THAT WE SEE THROUGH OUR BELIEFS AND NOT THROUGH OUR HEARTS, AND THAT'S WHAT WE SHOULD BE CONCERNED ABOUT.

SO BUT WE FIND THAT THIS STRUGGLE CREATES STRENGTH.

WE DISCUSSED UNSTABLE ENROLLMENTS DUE TO COVID AND WE'VE ALL HAD THAT CONVERSATION.

MIGRATION OF FAMILIES IN TO AND ACROSS THE STATE.

ENROLLMENT PROJECTIONS FOR PLANNING NEEDS, WHETHER THEY WERE INCREASING OR DECREASING.

DISTRICT GARDENS.

GROWING, TEACHING, LEARNING THROUGH STUDENTS.

LIVED EXPERIENCES IN THEIR COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS.

THIS WAS PRESENTED BY LONGVIEW ISD TRUSTEES, THEIR ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT.

AND WE LEARNED THAT THEIR SCHOOL DISTRICT COMPRISED OF 61% OF FAMILIES WHO WERE ON FOOD STAMPS.

SO THEY HAD A CHALLENGE.

SO WHAT THEY DID, THEY TOOK SIX ACRES OF LAND THAT WAS OWNED BY THE DISTRICT AND CREATED A FARM, AND THEY GREW CROPS, WHETHER IT'S FRUITS, VEGETABLES, THEY PLANTED PECAN TREES, THINGS THAT THEY COULD UTILIZE.

AND SO THEY SHARED THEIR CROP WITH THE FAMILIES AS WELL AS SCHOOLS.

SO THEY PROVIDED THE CHILD NUTRITION DEPARTMENT WITH MEALS.

SO WHAT A PARTNERSHIP TO HAVE.

SO THEY TURNED A FOOD DESERT INTO A DISTRICT GARDEN AND IT BENEFITED THE SCHOOLS.

THE THIRD SESSION, WHICH I THINK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOR ME, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT.

I ENJOYED THIS ONE BETTER THAN MOST OF THEM.

OPTICS MATTER.

ENSURE YOUR DISTRICT'S PUBLIC PERCEPTION IS REFLECTIVE OF HIS GOOD WORK.

WITHOUT PARENT AND COMMUNITY COMMUNICATION, SUPPORT FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION WILL CEASE TO EXIST.

THAT'S WHAT THE SPEAKER SAID.

AND SHE'S DONE A LOT OF RESEARCH.

SHE SUGGESTED THAT WE FIND UNIQUE WAYS TO ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY, RECOGNIZE PRINCIPALS WHO ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THAT COMMUNICATION PROCESS, PROVIDE SERVICE TRAINING FROM THAT FRONTLINE STAFF, WHETHER SHE'S A RECEPTIONIST, THE ASSISTANT TO THE SECRETARY OR ASSISTANT TO THE ADMINISTRATOR, WHOMEVER, THE FRONT LINE PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SERVICE THE COMMUNITY . STRENGTHEN YOUR DISTRICT'S REPUTATION AND BRAND.

AND THIS IS SOMETHING DR.

STINSON BROUGHT UP TWO OR THREE MONTHS AGO.

WE NEED TO DO MORE A BETTER JOB AT BRANDING OUR DISTRICT SO COMMUNICATE REGULARLY, WHICH MARK THOMAS DOES VERY WELL, RESULTING IN LEAVING THE TEAM OF EIGHT.

THAT'S US UP HERE TO FOCUS ON WHAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT.

AND WHAT IS THAT? STUDENT SUCCESS.

SO SATURDAY IT WAS OVER.

WHAT? LIKE BRENDA, I FOUND THAT BIRDVILLE IS SO AHEAD OF MOST OF THESE DISTRICTS.

IT'S IT'S AMAZING.

YES. AND SO A LOT OF THINGS THAT THEY SAY IN SESSIONS REALLY DON'T APPLY TO US BECAUSE WE'RE BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT.

BUT I TOOK SOME NOTES UNDER BONDS SUCCESS AND FAILURES, AND THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT WHY IT IS THAT PEOPLE VOTE NO.

AND MANY TIMES IT IS THAT THEY GO INTO THE VOTING BOOTH ANGRY.

SO THEY SAID THE KEY TO MAKING SURE YOUR BOND PASSING IS HAVING THE RIGHT MESSAGE AND TELLING THE RIGHT STORY. VOTERS WILL WANT TO KNOW, ARE YOU USING QUALITY PRODUCTS? HERE AGAIN, WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE BUILDINGS THAT BIRDVILLE HAS BUILT, YOU WILL SEE SOME OF THE BEST ARCHITECTURE, SOME OF THE BEST PRODUCTS. SO WE HAVE THAT GOING FOR US.

THEY ALSO LOOK AT THE LEVEL OF MAINTENANCE.

WHEN I WAS A BRAND NEW SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER, I TOURED A BUNCH OF THE BUILDINGS AND WHAT I SAW IN THOSE BUILDINGS WERE THEY MAY BE OLD, BUT THEY WERE WELL MAINTAINED AND VERY CLEAN.

AND THEN THE OTHER THING IS, IS YOUR BOARD COMMUNICATING TO THE TAXPAYERS WHAT WE'RE DOING? AND THIS IS SOMETHING, RICHARD, ALWAYS HARPS ON, WE HAVE TO GET OUR STORY OUT THERE.

ARE WE COMMUNICATING TO OUR COMMUNITY THAT WE'RE SPENDING THE MONEY WELL, THAT WE PAY BONDS OFF EARLY, THAT WE SAY, SAY PEOPLE IN THIS DISTRICT, $36 MILLION, IS THAT RIGHT? 30, $32 MILLION BY PAYING OFF BONDS EARLY.

SO VOTERS WANT TO KNOW THESE THINGS.

THEY WANT TO KNOW WHY IS THIS BOND NEEDED? DOES IT PROVIDE THE BEST SOLUTION? AND THEY SAY WELCOME THE ARGUMENTS.

BUT WITH EVERY ARGUMENT THAT IS PUT FORWARD TO YOU, YOU BE SURE AND RESPOND WITH A REPLY AND WHAT WILL IT COST AND CAN WE AFFORD IT? SO THAT'S THE THINGS THAT THEY SAID IN THIS SESSION THAT I THOUGHT WERE VERY GOOD AND THEN CREATING CULTURE ACROSS CAMPUSES, THEY TALKED ABOUT THAT 44% OF ALL TEACHERS LEAVE WITHIN THE FIRST FIVE YEARS, 10% LEAVE IN THE FIRST YEAR.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCES IN THE CLASSROOM FOR TEACHERS IS GOING WAY DOWN, MENTORSHIP IS WAY DOWN.

SO WHAT IS YOUR LEVEL OF BURNOUT? YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO LOOK AT THIS AND ACROSS THE STATE WITH COVID, IT'S BEEN A REAL TOUGH SITUATION WITH TEACHERS BEING BURNED OUT FROM THE RETURNING TO SCHOOL TO TRYING TO CLOSE THAT GAP.

AND SO THEY MENTIONED MANY THINGS THAT WE'RE CURRENTLY DOING, BUT THEY SAID TOXIC CULTURE WAS THE BIGGEST PREDICTOR OF PEOPLE LEAVING THE PROFESSION. SO YOU HAVE TO LOOK FOR THAT.

YOU'VE GOT TO MODEL APPROPRIATE, AUTHENTIC COMMUNICATION, VALUE EACH OTHER'S WELL-BEING, LOOK AT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS IN THE DISTRICT AND LOOK AT YOUR CAMPUS ATTRITION RATES.

AND THEY ALSO SAID TAKE CLIMATE SURVEYS.

HOWEVER, WE HAD TO LEAVE IN SOME SENTENCES THAT STILL REFERRED TO THE SIX WEEK GRADING PERIOD FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR.

THEREFORE, WE'RE ASKING FOR THE CHANGES TO BOARD POLICY, EIA LOCAL, THAT WILL REMOVE THE SENTENCES THAT REFER TO THE SIX WEEK GRADING PERIOD FOR ANY GRADING OR PROGRESS REPORTS BEING SENT TO PARENTS.
