AND FINALLY, AFTER READING CHAPTER 6 OF THE PROPERTY TAX CODE, I DISCOVERED CONSERVATION DISTRICTS COULD PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROCESS.
AND NOW, FOR THE 1ST TIME EVER, THEY ARE PARTICIPATING.

WE'VE GOT SOME NEW MEMBERS ON THE BOARD THIS YEAR. YOU MAY RECOGNIZE SOME NAMES.
WE'RE HAPPY TO WELCOME AMY SWIFT. I KNOW, EVERYBODY PROBABLY KNOWS HER FROM THE PTA COUNCIL.

THIS IS OUR HISTORY. I THINK EVERYONE IS PRETTY FAMILIAR WITH IT.
WE WERE FOUNDED BACK IN 2001. IT WAS KIND OF THE BRAINCHILD OF DOCTOR GRIGGS.
USING A TRIPLE FREEPORT EXEMPTION ESTABLISHED OUR FOUNDATION.
AND WE DO HAVE STILL SOME OF THE OGS ARE STILL PART OF OUR GROUP, AND WE'RE VERY PROUD TO STILL HAVE THEM ASSOCIATED WITH US AND STILL GIVING US LEADERSHIP AND GUIDANCE. SINCE WE STARTED THIS YEAR, WE HAVE GIVEN OVER $2.4 MILLION DIRECTLY SUPPORTING THE EDUCATORS AND THE KIDS OF THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT.[APPLAUSE] I ALWAYS LIKE TO GIVE A RECAP. SO THIS YEAR WE MADE SOME CHANGES.

WE CHANGED OUR GRANT CYCLE. WE CHANGED OUR DEADLINES.
WE DIDN'T GET AS MUCH OF A RESPONSE AS WE WANTED.

WE WERE ABLE TO DO A DISTRICT GRANT TO THE CTE DIVISION DEPARTMENT TO PROVIDE ROBOTICS SUPPLIES TO KIDS. NOW, THAT SEEMS LIKE SUCH A BASIC THING, BUT THAT THESE KIDS THAT WE KNOW THAT PARTICIPATE IN THESE PROGRAMS SCORE OUTSTANDING IN STEM. BECAUSE OF THIS ACTIVITY, WE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE THOSE PARTS.
THAT'S NOT INNOVATIVE, BUT IT IS. CAN I SAY THANK YOU FOR THAT? MY DAUGHTER IS AT NORTH RICHLAND MIDDLE ANOTHER ONE THAT REALLY TOUCHED MY HEART. AND I NEVER EVER SAY THIS.
BUT I DID SAY THIS TO THIS PRINCIPAL. I HAVE A I HAVE A TEACHER AT A MIDDLE SCHOOL THAT RAN AN AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR READING ON HER OWN DIME. IT WASN'T A BIG GRANT REQUEST.
AND WHEN I READ THAT, I SAID, IF WE DON'T APPROVE THIS, I WILL GET THIS APPROVED.

SO THERE'S OUR GRAND TOTAL $2.412 MILLION SINCE WE STARTED.
AND THIS YEAR WE GAVE OVER $150,000 IN THIS GRANT CYCLE.
SO THIS I'VE TOLD YOU THAT WE DID TO SIMPLIFY OUR PROCESS, WE ALSO INCREASED OUR GRANTS.
MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE. WE GOT 52 GRANT APPLICATIONS TOTALING $269,000.
THEY WEREN'T ALL ELIGIBLE. WE'VE GOT SOME CREATIVE PEOPLE TO OKAY, YOU CAN'T BLAME THEM FOR TRYING.
IT WAS IT WAS IT WAS A GOOD TRY. GOOD TRY. BUT WE WERE ABLE TO AWARD ALMOST EVERYTHING THAT WAS ELIGIBLE, EVERYTHING THAT WAS ELIGIBLE EXCEPT FOR $5,000.
WE ALSO DO SOME ADDITIONAL THINGS. WE SUPPORT OUR ANNUAL TEACHERS OF THE YEAR, WE DO THE CAMPUS TEACHERS OF THE YEAR, AND THEN WE PROVIDE SUPPORT TO OUR PTAS AS WELL.

AND WHAT THIS IS, IS PEER TO PEER FOUNDATION FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION AND AWARENESS.
AND IT'S A LOT LIKE HOPE SQUAD. I THINK YOU MAY BE FAMILIAR WITH HOPE SQUAD.
THIS IS LIKE HOPE SQUAD 2. SO NOT ONLY DOES IT PROVIDE THE PEER TO PEER COUNSELING PIECE OF IT, IT ALSO PROVIDES A PORTAL FOR PARENTAL SUPPORT, EDUCATOR SUPPORT, AND ALLOWS REAL TIME MONITORING OF SITUATIONS AND QUICK, QUICK INTERVENTION. WE ARE PARTNERING WITH THEM TO PROVIDE THIS SERVICE IN EVERY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOR $69,000.
IT'S NOT A LOT OF MONEY FOR A LOT OF KIDS. HOPEFULLY IT GOES WELL.
IMPLEMENTING THERE AND WE'LL BE ABLE TO EXPAND IT TO THE MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS.

BUT IF THE STATE SAYS THE LONG TERM GOAL IS 73 TO ME, AND I GUESS THE VISION THAT I HAVE FOR BIRDVILLE ISD IS THAT WE'D BE 8 TO 10% ABOVE EVEN WHAT THE STATE REQUIRES, LIKE IT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO SHOOT FOR THE MINIMUM. AND ULTIMATELY, THEY FOUND 95 SKELETON REMAINS IN THE GROUND THERE.
AND SO IT DELAYED THEM ABOUT A YEAR. THEY THEY TREATED IT VERY WELL.
WHEN YOU'RE A GOVERNMENT ENTITY, YOU WANT TO DO WHAT'S RIGHT.

SO STUDENTS COME FROM ALL OVER. THIS IS A VERY, VERY LARGE DISTRICT DOWN THERE AND LEARN ABOUT SOME OF THE HISTORY FROM 100, 150 YEARS AGO. VERY, VERY INTERESTING. THE CTE CENTER ITSELF WAS VERY MUCH LIKE ALL THE OTHER CTE CENTERS WE SEE, EXCEPT FOR THAT WHOLE WING OF A HISTORY SECTION THERE.
I THINK THEY OFFERED IT MORE THAN ONCE. I DON'T THINK WE WERE IN THE SAME SESSION.
BUT THE OVERALL IMPACT ON STUDENTS AND STAFFS, WHEN YOU HAVE A NEW FACILITY, WHEN YOU'RE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO DO THAT THEY REALLY STRESSED IT HELPS ATTENDANCE AND IT HELPS TEST SCORES AND IT HELPS THE RETENTION OF STAFF, YOU KNOW, AND IT'S EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE STAFF, TEACHERS AND SO FORTH.
CHARLES BUTT FOUNDATION DOES A TEACHERS POLL EACH YEAR AND THE IN THE 2025 TEACHER POLL.
AND A COUPLE OF THE THINGS THAT I FOUND PRETTY COOL.
5 YEARS AGO IN 2020, ABOUT 40% OF TEACHERS WERE ALTERNATIVE CERTIFIED.
AND NOW IT'S A IT'S CLOSE TO 50% IN JUST 5 YEARS.
I THINK THE ACTUAL PERCENTAGE WAS 49% IN THEIR TEACHER POLL.
SO IT'S REALLY HALF AND HALF ALTERNATIVE CERTIFIED VERSUS TRADITIONAL.
IS THAT KIND OF WHAT WE'RE SEEING? ARE WE SEEING NUMBERS THAT HIGH? IS IT REALLY IN THEIR POLLING, THEY FOUND THAT 3/4S OF TEACHERS WERE SAYING THAT THEY HAD SOME FEELINGS.
THEIR STUDENTS WERE BELOW EXPECTED GRADE LEVELS.
BUT EVEN WITH THESE LEARNING GAPS, 60% OF TEACHERS HAVE THE CONFIDENCE THAT THEY GET ADEQUATE SUPPORT AND RESOURCES TO ADDRESS THAT ISSUE. THAT WAS ONLY 40% 5 YEARS AGO.
SO I THINK THE THE FEELING AMONG TEACHERS IN OUR STATE IS THAT MANY, MANY MORE OF THEM FEEL LIKE THAT THEY HAVE WHAT THEY NEED TO HELP THESE LEARNING GAPS NOW COMPARED TO 5 YEARS AGO.
SO THAT'S GOOD. I THINK THE EMPHASIS IS THERE STATEWIDE.
AND AS FAR AS TEACHERS CONSIDERING LEAVING EDUCATION 12% LESS THIS YEAR COMPARED TO LAST YEAR. SO I THINK TEACHERS ARE KIND OF BEEN REBOUNDING A LITTLE BIT IN THE CLASSROOM.
TEACHERS AND MORE OF THEM ARE NOT CONSIDERING LEAVING.
COMPARED TO SOME PRIOR YEARS. BUT THAT TEACHERS POLL IS OUT THERE.
